NEx Funding Guidelines

Funding Policy

NEx will impose a limit of 15% on indirect costs (overhead) by proposing organizations for any project it funds. The organization must waive the remainder of the indirect costs.

​

Proposal Evaluation

All proposals will be evaluated by the NEx Steering Committee. A winning proposal will be forwarded to the NEx Board of Directors with recommendations for funding.

All proposals will be evaluated using the following criteria:

Technical Approach and Methodology

Innovation, Clarity, rigor, feasibility, and appropriateness of the proposed technical approach, including experimental, analytical, numerical, field, or guideline-development methods.
Innovation and Broader Impact
15%
Potential to advance the state of practice, support future standards or codes, improve durability, resilience, sustainability, constructability, or lifecycle performance, and provide value beyond the immediate project.
Deliverables and Implementation Value
15%
Usefulness, clarity, and practicality of proposed deliverables, including design recommendations, draft guideline or code language, test procedures, datasets, reports, technical papers, or committee-ready materials.
Project Management, Schedule, Budget, and Cofunding
15%
Realism of the project plan, schedule, milestones, budget, staffing plan, risk mitigation strategy, and ability to complete the work within the proposed timeframe and resources. Proposals that include credible cost sharing, in-kind contributions, or other cofunding commitments should receive favorable consideration.
Relevance to Topic Objectives
15%
Alignment with the stated proposal request, responsiveness to required scope items, and ability to address identified knowledge gaps, code needs, or industry implementation challenges.
Industry and Stakeholder Engagement
10%
Approach for engaging manufacturers, owners, designers, contractors, regulators, technical committees, and other stakeholders to support practical applicability and potential adoption.
Qualifications and Experience of the Project Team
10%
Demonstrated expertise of the principal investigators and team members in the relevant technical area, prior experience with similar research or standards-development efforts, and availability of necessary facilities or resources.

NEx Announces Funding for New Projects

NEx: An ACI Center of Excellence for Nonmetallic Building Materials is happy to announce sponsorship of new research projects. The new research projects are as follows:

NEx Invites Projects and Research Topic Suggestions for 2023 Business Plan

NEx: An ACI Center of Excellence for Nonmetallic Building Materials has successfully been able to source and fund ten (10) new projects in 2022. With our strong belief in involving industry and academia in developing 2023 project plans, NEx invites submissions of project ideas (technology and research needs) for funding in 2023. We are open to receive project ideas that support NEx’s mission and cover the NEx core functions and scope.

Your suggestions will be forwarded to the NEx Steering Committee and Board of Directors for 2023 business plan considerations. It is anticipated that Request for Proposals (RFPs) will be issued for selected project ideas later this year. Click to download and complete the fillable submission form. Please send the file with your submission to info@nonmetallic.org. Idea submissions will be accepted until August 7, 2022.
